The Closet Nursery

>> Monday, May 27, 2013

Happy Memorial Day! My husband is actually home for an American holiday so I have sent him out to the garden with our children so I can clean take pictures of our closet and blog about it! If you are new, start here then here. I would like to start by reporting, polka dots do make your child sleep through the night! No, as much as I would like to take credit for it, Wells was born a good sleeper. We parented both the exact same way. So whoever prayed for me during all my worries of not sleeping again for the next ten months, God heard you! Now let's pray every night that it sticks.

So here is our closet nursery.
It's kind of amazing that one Billy Bookcase and one mini crib are the exact length of one side of our closet isn't it? It's like it was meant to be.
I keep his clothes in a dresser in our room, so the shelf is more for things I need to quickly grab like swaddle blankets and pacis, plus a few sweet gifts from friends. Linds made the blue bunny in the photo below and Marianne sent him the cute little Bla Bla bear.
I had a few people ask about the ceiling on Instagram. I still have a lot of my college supplies (I use CAD for work and next to never do final drawings by hand) but I used the largest circle on my circle template to do the edge of the scallop. It was not too difficult.
Right now he is sleeping in his crib inside this moses basket.
(It's not as cute, but I take the padding around the edge out because I lay awake at night worrying about the possibility of him rolling over and suffocating)
And I sleep right there on the right side of the bed. So no baby monitor needed. I can hear him cry, but I can't hear every grunt and snort he makes, which is awesome. For the first couple of weeks we had him in the moses basket in a rocker stand right next to the bed. But he honestly started sleeping better when we moved him into his fancy closet (the dots perhaps...:)
This is one of my favorite things. Remi had this little frog light in his room and I borrowed it one night for Wells. I always thought it was neat, but in a teeny tiny little room it is magical.
So, in conclusion, I think everyone should put new babies in a walk-in-closets. It really is awesome and has worked out so perfectly. Babies are 20" long and barely move. I think when we start house hunting in the next couple of years I will pass the kitchens and all the bathrooms and head straight for the master bedroom where I will drop my tape measure and make sure it can comfortably hold a mini crib.
Night night!

The Nursery: Chapter 5 {crib sheets are easy}

>> Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Attention anyone who can turn on a sewing machine. You can sew your own crib sheets! This was such an easy project. I got the idea from this tutorial but then as usual, went rogue. A couple of weeks ago I found this Robert Kaufman fabric for 40% off at a local fabric store. I thought it be fun with the rug, so I bought several yards.

Step One: I laid the mattress over the fabric, left the full width and cut the top and bottom to match. Then I pinned the corners together and sewed. We went with a foam mattress, which is super light, and made this part of the project very easy.
Step Two: Once I had the fabric squared up on the mattress, I did a zig-zag stitch around the raw edges. I do not have a surger. I did this in lieu of folding a hem because the fabric is only 42" wide. I needed to maintain all the width possible or I would run the risk of it being too short on the sides.

Step Three: I cut four 10" pieces of elastic and pinned their center points on the four corners of the sheet. I sewed with a zig-zag stitch ,starting from the middle, and worked my way out in both directions. I stretched the elastic as I sewed, just like in this project. The result was a nice, fitted corner. And that is it!
The skirt was even easier. It still needs some tweaking. I will come back to that later. But the moral of the post: do not spend a billion dollars on cute crib sheets! If you can turn on your sewing machine, you can make your own crib sheets! And with all the fun fabric out there, the possibilities are endless!

Another Bonus: I like it so much, I'm no longer sad about going sans bumper.

High and Low

>> Monday, November 22, 2010

I usually don't blog twice in one day, but I'm pretty excited about this and had to share.

Restoration Hardware glider, that I love, $1549 + shipping and tax
Target version, that I kind of love more because of the taut fabric and more muted blue color, $539 + shipping and tax
total score. At least I hope it's a total score when it gets here in a week.
If I have learned one thing shopping at target.com, it's if you like it, order it, or it may be years before it is in stock again. Case and point.....
I wake up everyday hoping these are back in stock. Which is another good high/low. Target version above, $59
Frye version below $318

The Glider Search Continued...

>> Thursday, October 7, 2010

As I have discussed before, my husband and I have a tiny apartment. The tiny apartment means there is only room for so much furniture. A "comfy" chair has been on his list since the day we bought our first house in Memphis. Four years later, still no chair. Last year I told him if we were smart we would get a chair that had a glide or rock function for the one day Baby Sabbe. It may sound weird, but when you are limited on square footage you have to buy furniture strategically. So we looked at a lot of very stylish, semi-comfy, modern gliders. But at $1000, we still have no chair.

A couple of days ago I was perusing the Wally World site after reading that was where Jenny had purchased Joanna's baby bed. And look what I found.

Not bad right? For $350, not bad at all!
It comes in black as well, both with matching ottomans.
Look at this great nursery someone posted in the ratings section.

And they have a square arms option!
I really like the square arms one but that seat looks pretty narrow doesn't it? I hope our bottoms do not expand too much in the future, but again, we've got to plan ahead.

Vvelcome to Babyland

I want to design a nursery. Not for me, for someone else. Four walls designating a "nursery" is a luxury in these parts, except for maybe Gisele and Tom. As I have previously mentioned, I have known I was going to be an Interior Designer since the second grade. Well I have known I want to design a fabulous nursery for someone since seeing this classic for the first time...
I love how everyone is breathing new life into the classic Jenny Lind cribs.

Two of a Kind

>> Tuesday, April 13, 2010

A little over a year ago my friend Alicia gave birth to the two cutest little twin girls I have ever laid my eyes on. During her pregnancy Alicia was on bed rest and took up crafting in a major way and  began blogging. I think she is now the go-to girl for the applique onesies. She also put together an adorable nursery and I asked her to share a few photos of the space. First up, her clients....

Ridiculous right!? Her baby photographer is also amazing.
I want to save my pennies and fly her to Boston when I get pregnant.
Here is their room...
And here is the dresser in the picture above BEFORE.
And a painting Alicia did herself
I love all of the personal touches. So sweet.
Good news for Memphians, they are selling their super cute house. You should check it out.
And in case you did not absorb the cuteness in the first photo, here's another one for the road.
Thanks for sharing Alicia!
For all the mommies who are probably wondering, the dresses are from here.
