The lights were out, we had just left an awards gala where we had soaked in all of the top design talents from the southeast, and she whispered, "don't you wish you just didn't know the difference?" I knew what she meant immediately, sighed <i>yessssss</i> and fell asleep.<br />
<br />
I'm not a car person, I wear clothes from Old Navy, and the most expensive pair of shoes I own are probably my tennis shoes but I've seen <a href="http://www.christopherspitzmiller.com/">Christopher Spitzmiller</a> lamps and <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/92323861087256999/">velvet upholstery fabric</a> so luscious that touching it once is not enough. And I've seen flawlessly installed dentil molding. And that, those architectural details; the tile joints, the drywall imperfections, the overuse of caulk to fix the bad trim cuts. That is the part that will eventually kill me (such a noble death) Hopefully not, but it's looking likely. And sometimes, for my own sanity, it would be nice to not know the difference.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
But sanity is probably overrated, right!? Because these details are absolutely not...</div>

Bellevue was originally just a couple of commercial buildings established to serve the local farming community and really was not developed into much else until the 1970s (not the best architectural era). I grew up in a home built in the late 80s. So when we would drive through these older areas of Nashville and I saw things like limestone columns, old wooden shutters, and two story porches, even as I child I knew those things were special. And now as an adult, I know they are not only special but fleeting.<br />
<br />
We had dinner last night with friends who are developing a few houses on our street. One historic and one brand new. It's a personal dream of mine to buy and renovate older homes in Nashville. But as the rumor mill has indicated and our friends confirmed, there is no money to be made in historic preservation. In the end it would have been less expensive for them to tear down the amazing, historic gem and build a brand new spec house. And with that bit of information, both 7 year old and 35 year old me cried on the inside.<br />
<br />
I joke that I am two kidneys deep in our own house. We've put so much time and money into it (and still have so much more to do!) that I could not get rid of it right now even if I wanted to. But last night's dinner made me wonder, are we the only Tom Hanks and Shelley Long left in this town? At a time when Nashville is bursting with newcomers (with more than healthy housing budgets!) where have all the money pit romantics gone?<br />
<br />

Restraint is hard. Restraint when speaking (an especially hard one for me) restraint when eating, when selecting clothes, *when perusing social media* -- <b>restraint when designing interiors</b>. It's about selection, about prioritizing, restraint is about self control--something I think we're all becoming less skilled at in our world of consumption. When we see restraint in practice we know it is good- like a pruned boxwood or a well tailored suit. But I think in our world of noise, we know to guard our ears, but sometimes we forget our eyes. Whether you're a minimalist or a maximalist, there's always a case for restraint- you can eat a decadent meal and leave happy, or you can eat a decadent meal and leave sick. I think the same kind of experience can be translated into interiors, and so we practice restraint.<br />

It's 9:45 and I'm ready to go to the club. Except I have three babies in bed and have not been to a "club" since Bryan graduated med school and I rallied for Raifords. But I. am. awake. So, let's blog.<br />
<br />
Tap, tap, tap...is anyone still listening to this story? I fear I've let down anyone who may have been taking notes in the beginning. Might be a little late to clarify, but this is not <i>How to Become an Interior Designer</i>, just how <b>I </b>became an interior designer. And I really want to finish so that when I'm an old lady reading my own blog (and am finally over the fact that I accidentally deleted all the photos in posts prior to September 2009) I will remember this story, because none of it is important. But it sure did feel important at the time. And I have a feeling that is going to be the reoccurring theme of my entire life.<br />
<br />
So in 2009 Bryan and I packed our bags and moved to Boston. But let me back up for a minute. I had planned this part of my life. I was going to have 5 years of "big firm" experience, a solid portfolio, and we were going to move to a big city and I was going to work for a big city firm. But just a month before I put my notice in, the firm I worked for in Memphis had a huge layoff. I did not get laid off, but the whole experience of my buddies being called to HR and then being told to pack a box, shook me to my core. It was horrible. And rumor had it, it was happening all over the country. So we move to Boston and guess what, no one was hiring. I sent out over 60 resumes. Crickets.<br />
<br />
So I take it as a sign, I am supposed to take a break from design. I get a job at a coffee shop one block from our apartment. I think it's going to be like Friends, I'm Rachel, etc. etc. It was not like Friends. It was like working in an ER, except we were not saving lives, just making coffee. I also got a job teaching a drawing class for an inner city after school program. I am embarrassed to admit this, but again, I was Michelle Pfeiffer, they were all going to hate me at first, then they were going to love me. But, alas, they mostly just hated me. There were some sweet moments, but I got called the B word more than once and learned that teaching is the freakin' hardest job ever. Teachers and baristas, y'all have my lifelong respect.<br />
<br />
Then one day in October this guy calls about one of the 60 resumes I sent out that September. He owns a small firm in Somerville, a town right outside of Boston, and he's looking to hire a designer with commercial interiors experience. I get the job. I work with a small team hired as contract employees on a corporate headquarters space over the next 6 months. If I did not mention, this firm was SMALL. And coming from corporate America, the lack of "standards" drove me nuts. There was no protocol for file saving, no CAD standards, some of the computer programs were pirated versions (ha!). It was the polar opposite of the structured corporate environment I had come from but you know what, he was still making money. The veil had been pulled back, you didn't have to know everything. You just had to <i>confidently</i> know something, and fake the rest. I mean, this firm was being awarded HUGE projects in China and he had no CAD standards. Mind blowing.<br />
<br />
So my contract ended and I take the train down to city hall and get a business licence. I had no clients. I remember crying in my car because I wanted to go to Ikea to buy something but I had no money (total first world probs) but while I was in my car, crying, my phone rang. It was a friend who worked at the small firm in Somerville, he was moving to China and wanted to know if I wanted to take over some work he began with Harvard's Stem Cell Institute. And the rest, as they say, is history. I taught at the Boston Architectural College the first year to help supplement my income (again, teaching, I'm pretty sure even the college girls called me a B). But four years later, I never could have imagined what a fun ride it would be.<br />
<br />
And that's the story of how I became an interior designer, and then later a business owner. If you're reading this, you made it!!! I promise my next post, although it may be in 6 months, will have pictures.<br />
<br />Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2924892864309914498.post-71407811908021535912015-05-06T15:48:00.002-04:002015-05-06T16:03:52.427-04:00How I Became an Interior Designer: Part 4So, I could not leave everyone thinking that I have spent the past 10 years crying, like my last post may have indicated. Things <i>DID</i> get better. It was a rough year. But by the beginning of the second, I was wiser, tougher, and [the game changer]...less emotional. I credit the last to an architect who worked in my department, her name was Anna. She was well respected and confident, and didn't accomplish that by tearing others down. She was also married with three kids and went home at 5 pm. If you've worked in the corporate architecture world, you know that's a big deal. But one day Anna pulled me aside and plainly said <b>"You cannot let them see you cry. If you need to cry, go to the bathroom. But this is a man's world and crying is not going to help your cause."</b> And honestly, it wasn't men who were making me cry (ladies, why are we so hard on each other!?) But it WAS men that were mostly calling the shots around there. And it was as if no one had ever told me that before. I just stopped, that day. And as far as I can remember, I never cried at work again.<br />
<br />
The following year Bryan and I got married and I moved to Memphis. In Memphis I took a job with another large firm and there was another game changer, my boss liked me. It was the first time in my career I didn't feel like I was just producing something, or trying to be relevant, or <i><b>dying</b></i> to be creative. This guy hired me to be creative, asked me what I thought about things, and appreciated when I worked Saturdays. It was a change of pace I so desperately needed and one major factor in why I am still in this industry today (because I really have tried to bail a million times:)<br />
<br />
That all being said, the new job was still, and probably more so, a man's world. And ladies, it's not right, but it just <i>is</i>. My approach to dealing with that was just to consume knowledge. I learned how to put a set of construction drawings together front to back by myself, I could detail a load bearing wall, I became LEED accredited, and NCIDQ certified. I needed to prove I could do more than pick paint and fabrics and that interior design was not an afterthought and most importantly, not a "girl's job".<br />
<br />
Three years later I headed to Boston with a full portfolio, feeling very empowered (maybe a little too empowered!)...and then the 2009 recession happened. More on that to come...<br />

<br />
Picking up where I left off, I spent the next four years in college studying interior design (in the space photographed above). The interior design program at UT is under the architectural college and I think most people might be surprised to learn how absolutely grueling (glorious at times) but really, really emotionally, physically, and mentally taxing design school was for most of us. I was once accused of being prejudice against handicap people during a review. I cried. I once had a professor ask me if an ant had walked in ink and then crawled all over my boards. I cried. And then best, the dean of the school taught a lecture where she occasionally made us turn in sketches. At the top of my paper she once wrote "you cannot draw!"...I cried. I cried, we all cried. We stayed up until two am, sometimes all night, all the time. Showers were not a priority. We were gross, sleep deprived, but in the strangest way, having the time of our lives because we all had each other. Those mean old professors knew what they were doing. They were preparing us for the real world. And the real world was about to be really rough for me.<br />
<br />
So I graduated and despite all the criticism, which I think lightened up as the years went on, I somehow made it out of college thinking I was the bomb. The market was tough but I got a job with one of the larger firms in Nashville in their corporate interiors department. I think it took me approximately 36 hours in the real world to realize, <i>NOPE</i> I was not the bomb, and approximately zero people thought I was the bomb. I was slow at CAD, I was not well versed in deciphering building codes, and the worst part, assigned to work full time with a designer who I did not meet during my interview and to put it mildly, was not a good fit for.<br />
<br />
The first year out of college, similar to the first year in design school, was so rough. I cried. all. the. time. The book <u>The Devil Wears Prada</u> had just come out and it was like therapy to me. I was not alone. I remember sitting at my desk at 6 o'clock one evening, most everyone had already left for the day. I had been given a set of red lines (marked up drawings that needed to be corrected in the computer) by a more senior designer, right after lunch that day. She said "I need these finished, stamped, and on my desk by 5". I was already scared of this lady and knew the task was nearly impossible (at least for me) but I wasn't asked, I was told. So I sat for the next four hours, no restroom breaks, no water breaks, head down...clicking...clicking...clicking. 4:30, I'm finished. I plot the drawing. Get it stamped. Get it signed.<br />
<br />
I think I got the sheet on her desk by 5:10. She snatched it, huffed a dismissal, and I sheepishly walked back to my desk and...you guessed it...<i>criiiied</i>. There was only one guy still in the open office area where I resided at this point and he came over with a beer in hand (where did this beer come from? I have no idea) but he sat it on my desk and very plainly said "don't cry. she sucks" and I laughed, through my tears (which I agree with Dolly Parton, is the best emotion) My boss, the head of our department, called me into his office 10 minutes later after getting the full run down from my personal Anna Wintour of just how terrible I was. He began the conversation with "don't worry, we're not going to fire you".<br />
<br />
I remember my head spinning, thinking, "FIRE ME! why are we even discussing firing me!? I come early, I work late. Yes, there has been a huge learning curve for me from school to real world, but fire me!? I'm 22 years old and I'm really, really trying here."<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
And that's where I'll stop today. I promise the next chapter takes a nice turn for the positive. BUT I have always wanted to share that little sad time in my career (it went on like that for a straight year) on my blog because I think it's easy to look at projects on Instagram or designer's portfolios and think that it's always been just one big escalator moving up. Not the case for me at all. If IG were around in 2004 mine would have been a nice rotation of this...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Redlines-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Redlines-01.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and this...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2009/361/a/7/Crying_Eye_Stock_3_by_Maerceci.jpg" height="473" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
And ain't nobody want to follow that. But to all you talented, under-valued, poorly managed new graduates out there thinking of jumping ship and taking the LSAT, hang in there. It's going to get better.</div>

But I think it's worth noting that I watched a million episodes of Designing Women in between. So I did have some continuing education after my original revelation.<br />
<br />
But high school, I was ok at high school. I did everything just ok. I applied myself here and there, but reflecting back on high school as an adult, I could have tried a lot harder. I took the ACT (sans studying), applied to college (just one) and was accepted....BUT....did not get accepted to the interior design program. I met with our school counselor about what major I would declare and I remember her telling me that maybe interior design was not for me. UT only took around 15 students into the program every year and my academic performance thus far was not going to get me into that select group. But instead of being all <i>what kind of dream crushing school counselor are you!?</i> I accepted the challenge, checked <i>undeclared</i>, and headed over to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to pick out some extra-long twin sheets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J7f9V3ETKVo/VQuVORACPRI/AAAAAAAAKGQ/Aqzuzyo4iNw/s1600/senior%2Byear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J7f9V3ETKVo/VQuVORACPRI/AAAAAAAAKGQ/Aqzuzyo4iNw/s1600/senior%2Byear.jpg" height="400" width="268" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
^^^what's a blog post without a picture?^^^</div>
There are overalls under that awesome pullover, in case you were curious. AND in my hair, naturally curly, is pushed back with one of those comb headbands. Pin away.<br />
<br />
So I went to college and for the first time in my academic career, I decided I needed to do more than just <i>ok</i>. I scheduled a meeting with the Dean of the Interior Design program, who told me that they take a handful of non-freshman students every year based on portfolio review. I spent the second semester of my freshman year in various art studios, with some really cool people who were forging their own academic paths, and it.was.awesome. I re-applied that spring and <i>guess what, senior year school counselor</i>?? the faux fortune teller was right. I was accepted. Stephanie Frye was still on track to becoming an interior designer.<br />
<br />
And if you happen to have made it this far and are thinking, <i>why did I read this, I don't even want to be an interior designer?</i> My husband, who just finished his training at a Harvard Hospital, who DID study for his ACT, and is the most handsome nerd I know, did not get accepted into medical school the first time he applied.<br />
<br />
So, don't let rejection stop you. It's actually been a re-occurring theme in my career, but more on that later! Part 3 coming soon.<br />
<br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2924892864309914498.post-33307863234972470532015-02-04T13:55:00.000-05:002015-02-04T17:46:15.497-05:00How I Became an Interior Designer : Part 1I get a lot of emails with questions asking me the path to becoming an interior designer. The most honest answer is, there are several paths. Some of the most talented, successful interior designers I know have no formal training. You see their work on the cover of shelter magazines everyday. On the flip side, some interior designers have both an undergraduate and a masters degree in design. They are your design professors or the head of interiors departments in commercials firms, like my insanely talented friend Heather who was just named one of Nashville's <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/nashville/blog/2015/01/nbj-announces-2015-40-under-40-winners.html">40 under 40</a> (baller!) Me? I am somewhere in between. <i>But</i> if you want to hear my story, I'm going to make you start in the beginning. And so I bring you a new blog series...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>How I Became an Interior Designer </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Part 1</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The year, 1988. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZKHPHQSzQ3U/VNJl-1EIKvI/AAAAAAAAKEs/zCKZI57k4lY/s1600/baby%2Bme.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZKHPHQSzQ3U/VNJl-1EIKvI/AAAAAAAAKEs/zCKZI57k4lY/s1600/baby%2Bme.jpg" height="640" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just doing second grade, one day at time, occasionally gazing into mirrors to remind myself how lucky I am to be a child of the 80's.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And then one weekend in that very formative year, our elementary school had it's annual school fair. There was a fortune teller at this event, who I knew was not legit because she was my second grade teacher, BUT I was willing to overlook that in hopes of gaining some insight on my future. So, being the planner that I am, I went straight for the meat...<i><b>what am I going to be when I grow up?</b> </i>She looked into her crystal ball and said "an interior designer." And I said "what do they do?" She said something along the lines of picking out fabrics and decorations and getting paid for it, and I was like <i>uhm, ok! </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And so at the ripe old age of 7, my career plans were set and I have not changed my story since </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(minus that stint after college where I hated my job and wanted to take the LSAT)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Be back soon with part 2.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<i>2015, I'm so excited about you.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After tons of <a href="http://sabbespot.blogspot.com/2014/11/a-reminder-bloom-where-i-am-planted.html">groaning and feeling sorry for myself</a>, we found a house in November that we closed on last month. We are homeowners! Again! Yikes! We are renovating a small portion of the house before we move in, so we are relishing the benefits of apartment living (on call emergency maintenance services) for just a few more months. This phase of renovation will include the kitchen, a downstairs bathroom, and a back area that we will use as a family room. I realized last week that I am basically renovating a small apartment inside a larger house. I'm like an animal who has lived in a small cage for 6 years, I need to be eased into larger surroundings, lest I totally freak out. And then the rest of the house is going to have to sit empty for the next 10 years while we save money to furnish it:) I did buy a bouncy house for the formal living room. So unless bouncy houses are the new Chippendale armoire, don't be looking for us in the next issue of Elle Decor. But you can follow along on IG under the hashtag #asabberenovationstory</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a quick mockup I did of one of the kitchen walls when doing a materials study.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hhjyi5QfpDg/VK7infzVFKI/AAAAAAAAKDo/kOQH2sT--lU/s1600/kitchen%2Bmock%2Bup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hhjyi5QfpDg/VK7infzVFKI/AAAAAAAAKDo/kOQH2sT--lU/s1600/kitchen%2Bmock%2Bup.jpg" height="184" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I keep telling Bryan that it's going to be like a modern Dowton Abby kitchen. He's like <i>mmmkay, whatever</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And, in other exciting news...I'm 23 weeks pregnant with a GIRL! My boys call her Strawberry Mary. Remi actually started calling her that weeks before we knew it was a girl, which is kind of crazy. He says she has red hair and red fingernails. Last week he added red eyes, also kind of crazy. But no matter what she looks like, we are so excited to welcome her into our family in May. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I3voRghELKA/VK7lrjiJPpI/AAAAAAAAKD4/aj5mJgk5rRo/s1600/strawberry%2Bmary.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I3voRghELKA/VK7lrjiJPpI/AAAAAAAAKD4/aj5mJgk5rRo/s1600/strawberry%2Bmary.jpg" height="295" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And, more exciting news, she won't have to <a href="http://sabbespot.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-closet-nursery.html">sleep in a closet</a>!</div>

It's not that cold here, but it's cold enough to where no one really goes to the park. I met a mom two weeks ago at the park, we were the only two there. She just moved here from Chicago and is also no stranger to playing outside in frigid temps, we decided we needed to hang out a lot. Indoor parenting is not my forte.<br />
<br />
This weekend I plugged my real camera up for the first time in months and came across photos from our trip to Martha's Vineyard this past August. I have prayed this before and I will do it again, <i>Dear Lord, when I day, may heaven look just like Martha's Vineyard</i>. We've been there every summer since Remi was born and always stay in <a href="http://sabbespot.blogspot.com/2013/09/first-time-i-went-to-marthas-vineyard.html">the same little cottage</a> in Edgartown. I am kind of a creature of comfort and only like to be away from home for so long, but when I go to Martha's Vineyard, I want to stay forever. Well, forever if it were always August.<br />
<br />
This year we rode bikes a lot. The boys were both big enough to be pulled in a trailer. And because I knew we were moving and I may not get back to the island for a long time, I decided I wanted to spend one morning documenting everything that makes my heart happy. The homes on Martha's Vineyard make my heart very happy. Here are some of my favorites.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TpumbdAaEQk/VIi8XuHsIPI/AAAAAAAAKAM/tIl_Yt_Jgn8/s1600/house%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TpumbdAaEQk/VIi8XuHsIPI/AAAAAAAAKAM/tIl_Yt_Jgn8/s1600/house%2B3.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hot legs there is also my favorite.</div>

This year we were lucky enough to have <a href="http://sabbespot.blogspot.com/2014/10/good-friends-make-great-clients.html">the Roses</a> join us. This picture of our babies melts my heart.</div>

Right now, 90% of my workload is still outside the state of TN, which has actually been working out great. I have been working with out of town clients since I went out on my own back in 2009. My first residential project was in <a href="http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/1156254/list/Houzz-Tour--Bold-and-Eclectic-Tribeca-Apartment">Manhattan</a>. One client I have been working with for a while is in Rochester. I get a lot of text pics from out of town clients, as they are basically my constant on-sight eyes. Here are some recent ones from Rochester. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A teeny powder bath getting some navy + Teil Duncan action.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8iHt3PWCtHM/VHygZ9XFWyI/AAAAAAAAJ-Q/ryv5AyMXers/s1600/teil%2Bduncan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8iHt3PWCtHM/VHygZ9XFWyI/AAAAAAAAJ-Q/ryv5AyMXers/s1600/teil%2Bduncan.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think the very first thing we did in this house was wallpaper the foyer. It was a great jumping off point in that I knew if she was going to let me use this wallpaper, she was going to let me do some really fun things:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-brt99OV5TUA/VHygMHf0H3I/AAAAAAAAJ9k/1RJhUcwQ07I/s1600/foyer%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-brt99OV5TUA/VHygMHf0H3I/AAAAAAAAJ9k/1RJhUcwQ07I/s1600/foyer%2B2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This room used to be a dark, wood paneled office. They were going to rip the paneling down because they didn't think it felt like a kid's room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2x2ECSuvVP4/VHygU9584WI/AAAAAAAAJ98/oP9vmfA3K00/s1600/clay's%2Broom%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2x2ECSuvVP4/VHygU9584WI/AAAAAAAAJ98/oP9vmfA3K00/s1600/clay's%2Broom%2B2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I convinced them to just paint it. Now I want full height paneling in all of my nursery projects.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZS6cH_q6G3o/VHygWFpbUII/AAAAAAAAJ-E/KU8kHPumILw/s1600/clay's%2Broom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZS6cH_q6G3o/VHygWFpbUII/AAAAAAAAJ-E/KU8kHPumILw/s1600/clay's%2Broom.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I posted this beaut on my IG account this weekend. My client's dad made this. And it's kind of amazing how well the wood coloring works with the Samantha French print. I love Samantha French's work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3gmHS9z1p8I/VHyhdctTwUI/AAAAAAAAJ-Y/FAayZvItevA/s1600/dining%2Broom%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3gmHS9z1p8I/VHyhdctTwUI/AAAAAAAAJ-Y/FAayZvItevA/s1600/dining%2Broom%2B2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We actually used another one of her prints for a client in Ann Arbor earlier this year. Such tranquil, happy pieces. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8vh1S3GCDMU/VHymjdcFBgI/AAAAAAAAJ-8/7MTvsRt1Qt0/s1600/samantha%2Bfrench.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8vh1S3GCDMU/VHymjdcFBgI/AAAAAAAAJ-8/7MTvsRt1Qt0/s1600/samantha%2Bfrench.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But the furniture dilemma in Rochester was mixing styles. Nellie had this antique piece (below) from a family member. And then we purchased the reclaimed dining table. The third piece was tricky. I didn't want to do anything painted. I thought it would cheapen the space. But I thought introducing another wood species would just be too much. So her dad made her this clean lined buffet (she leans more towards modern) and the wood matches her antique piece. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I swear I almost died/cried when she sent me the photos. It's just perfect. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My strange guilty pleasure these days is reading the comment sections of various Facebook posts. When I want to feel good about the world, I read Humans of New York. When I want to be kind of scared of the world (I like scary movies) I read comments under the Obama administration posts or Houzz.com. My point is, we all have opinions, really strong (sometimes scary) opinions and all of those opinions came from somewhere, right? My little boys don't walk into my kitchen and say "uhh, ugliest cabinets ever" and trust me, if they thought it, they would. My three year old informed me last week that I needed a bigger neck, fortunately I am very confident with my neck size. But in thinking about design, what have been the major influences on my life? I came up with a few.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Nashville! and good southern architecture</b></div>
<br />
I grew up in Nashville and a couple of school projects in my elementary years involved some of the local historic sites. Two big ones were the Belle Meade Plantation and the Traveller's Rest, which I built a sugar cube model of in the third grade and many moons later danced my first dance as a married woman.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7I-dezkNoxw/VGqxtEZXhzI/AAAAAAAAJ8M/Ih8ZFzcB060/s1600/belle%2Bmeade%2Bplantation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7I-dezkNoxw/VGqxtEZXhzI/AAAAAAAAJ8M/Ih8ZFzcB060/s1600/belle%2Bmeade%2Bplantation.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qGjXJNoen8g/VGqxtQCBxgI/AAAAAAAAJ8Q/Yd_PxFMToVE/s1600/traveller's%2Brest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qGjXJNoen8g/VGqxtQCBxgI/AAAAAAAAJ8Q/Yd_PxFMToVE/s1600/traveller's%2Brest.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Porches, shutters, shingles, that's my love language. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>TV and movies</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was a child of the 80's and I believe pediatricians were a little bit cooler on the tv allowances back in those days. (30 minutes a day, come on!?) Needless to say, I watched a ton of tv. Anyone remember when Stephanie and Michelle got a bedroom makeover on Full House? Is it weird that I do? </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VGGJtEmPs0w/VGqzrCJ2t1I/AAAAAAAAJ8g/LnpTpPAUlsk/s1600/full%2Bhouse%2Bbedroom.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VGGJtEmPs0w/VGqzrCJ2t1I/AAAAAAAAJ8g/LnpTpPAUlsk/s1600/full%2Bhouse%2Bbedroom.png" height="303" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That room was the bomb. In adulthood I do not think that room is the bomb, but you know what I loved the most about it and still do? Sisters sharing a room. I love that my boys are currently in the same room and hope they want to stay that way until they go to college (doubtful but hopeful). After all, <a href="http://sabbespot.blogspot.com/2014/09/nashville-new-projects-my-favorite-room.html">nothing is cuter than a pair of twin beds</a> and the thought of them sharing late night thoughts on life (boys do that, right?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Home Alone, the movie that had us all <i>wishing</i> that our parents would up and totally forget us on a family vacation AND that our home would be invaded by robbers. Questionable story line, spot on architecture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FuAIQwly-4M/VGq2ppW6zLI/AAAAAAAAJ8s/JqEWmnBkqG4/s1600/home%2Balone%2Bhouse.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FuAIQwly-4M/VGq2ppW6zLI/AAAAAAAAJ8s/JqEWmnBkqG4/s1600/home%2Balone%2Bhouse.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And <i>oh</i> Father of the Bride. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DMafB4iKXGo/VGq3JMFhTqI/AAAAAAAAJ80/Pjp4oWuod5I/s1600/father%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bbride%2Bhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DMafB4iKXGo/VGq3JMFhTqI/AAAAAAAAJ80/Pjp4oWuod5I/s1600/father%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bbride%2Bhouse.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Let's not forget the nursery. I'm glad 8 year old Stephanie had no idea she would be <a href="http://sabbespot.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-closet-nursery.html">bringing her babies home to a closet</a>. The irony would have just been too much:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D83q9_ZKtlQ/VGq4HZvzRSI/AAAAAAAAJ9A/5tUdQn2l-Oc/s1600/father%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bbride%2Bnursery.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D83q9_ZKtlQ/VGq4HZvzRSI/AAAAAAAAJ9A/5tUdQn2l-Oc/s1600/father%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bbride%2Bnursery.jpg" height="215" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Other things that come to mind are my grandmother's kitchen, which has the dining table right in the middle. I just loved the energy that was always around it. And my great grandmother's garden, she lived in a trailer but had such a luscious array of beautiful, perfectly arranged flowers on her property, you felt like you were walking in the gardens of Versailles. And I'm sure I could rack my brain for more, including some from our time in Boston.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But it's funny to think how something as simple as our preference in design came about, isn't it? Because even if we say we don't, we all have a preference. And like most of our opinions on things, that preference was somehow shaped by our lives. It may seem trite, but people are as passionate about their design preferences as they are with their politics. If you don't believe me, spend some time over <a href="https://www.facebook.com/houzz?ref=br_tf">here</a>. I have come to the conclusion that some people have stronger opinions about different species of granite than they do over who controls the Senate, making me feel very validated (as a design practitioner) and very scared (as a human being:)</div>

And it's all for ridiculous reasons that are so dumb and pointless, leaving me with no real case to complain at all. But none the less, I complain. And quite frankly, I am getting so sick of myself. Somewhere between residency and this new post residency life, I have become entitled. ENTITLED!? My own worst enemy. When did that happened?<br />
<br />
But every morning when I leave our apartment there is this sweet little reminder for me to bloom where I am planted. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rgnnlYXQeNU/VFz3Bn-xDdI/AAAAAAAAJ7s/JdAcyC7tlHo/s1600/college%2Bdoor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rgnnlYXQeNU/VFz3Bn-xDdI/AAAAAAAAJ7s/JdAcyC7tlHo/s1600/college%2Bdoor.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The apartment door of the 20 something year old girls next door (who loooove Taylor Swift, but I digress). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And you kind have to see how dark and stale and void of natural light the little corridor that leads to all of the apartment units is, to really appreciate this decorating effort. Mums, y'all, MUMS! And me, the crotchety old lady next door saw them stick these out a few weeks ago and thought, <i>those are never going to bloom. It's dark in here, they never see the sun</i>. And you know what? They bloomed! (I obviously know nothing about mums)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Ee-F8LAR5k/VFz3BhF6hsI/AAAAAAAAJ7o/NIFxMOu8P64/s1600/our%2Bdoor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Ee-F8LAR5k/VFz3BhF6hsI/AAAAAAAAJ7o/NIFxMOu8P64/s1600/our%2Bdoor.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To give you better appreciation of the contrast, this is my front door. A stick, in it's negotiated keeping place once it was established my three year old was not allowed to bring it in our house. And no doormat. I think in the back of my head it's been my notice to anyone who is wondering, including the Vanderbilt football players whose college experience was severely dampened when the parents with young children moved in downstairs, we are not staying. But we are. We're here and life is happening now. And despite my Pinterest board that I spent countless nights alone over the past several years curating for this phase of life, life does not look like that right now. And that's ok. <i>Do you hear me Stephanie Sabbe!? It's OK.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But back to those mums, they bloomed! And I am going to do my best to do the same.</div>

I'm not just talking about acquaintances or social friends (although those can make great clients too) GOOD friends. Like friends that you've confided in about how hard breastfeeding is or laughed with about how you still cannot jog without peeing your pants. Basically, good mama friends. I have had a couple of good mama friends become clients over the past couple of years and it has been the best. Jody Rose is one of those friends. This Sunday the Boston Globe Magazine featured a few spaces in Rose's home and my friend <a href="http://stylecarrot.com/">Marni</a> did a great job telling the story of how two good friends can work together. You can read the full article <a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/magazine/2014/10/18/beige-beautiful-newton/vrYB6lISNydTvuUU2epTvI/story.html?p1=Article_Facet_Related_Article">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
We originally shot this home this past summer and because Jody and I are friends and I have been toying with the idea of having my clients in a couple of shots for each project in my portfolio, I made her model for us.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh yes, have I not mentioned? She is also a super model. Little TJ and my Remi were born just a few weeks apart, so I love that he was able to slow down long enough to be in this shot. There <i>was</i> bribery involved. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Globe Magazine wanted to do something a bit more casual so they got this sweet shot with Channing, who is just a few weeks younger than Wells.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Love these kids, love this family. And as far as working with friends, I think if you're comfortable enough to share that you have mastitis for the third time, you're going to be just fine sharing that the crystal chandelier she loves is going to look like a bad Versailles knock off :)</div>

Are you? I am very excited. I have wanted to go for years but being in Boston with two little babies and a husband in residency made it basically impossible. But now that we're back in Nashville, I'm there! Say hi if you will be there too.<br />
<br />
Speaking of Nashville, <i>my oh, my you have gotten so cool in our absence</i>. I read an article Saturday afternoon about the <a href="http://biscuitlovetruck.com/">Biscuit Love Truck</a> that is parked in the front of <a href="http://www.whitesmercantile.com/">White's Mercantile</a> on Sunday mornings. So after church we made a beeline that way. Bryan and I both had The Princess, so good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-04cc5YuOqgM/VDwQnaqOdpI/AAAAAAAAJ40/k6_pUVUWjHM/s1600/white's%2Bmercantile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-04cc5YuOqgM/VDwQnaqOdpI/AAAAAAAAJ40/k6_pUVUWjHM/s1600/white's%2Bmercantile.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/19703317094548240/">image</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And White's Mercantile, such a well curated space! Reminded me a little bit of <a href="http://hudsonboston.com/">Hudson</a> in Boston, but more general store-esk. In heaven, I will roam through one continuous general store. I spent an hour this summer in <a href="http://www.mvpreservation.org/p.php/preservation/community/alleys-general-store">Alley's General Store</a> on Martha's Vineyard while my husband threw Cheddar Bunnies into the back seat to keep our children at bay. I bought a set of blue gingham napkins and held out hope for the entire 60 minutes that I was going to run into the Obamas. Did not happen.<br />
<br />
I am very proud of this pretty city I grew up in, although this level of coolness has only left Bryan and I acutely aware of how uncool we are. He cannot grow a beard to save his life and I have had one too many kids to attempt to wear my jeans above my belly button. Unless mom jeans worn by actual mom bodies is coming back, I got that:)Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2924892864309914498.post-75786616709258256432014-09-29T09:10:00.000-04:002014-09-29T09:14:45.128-04:00Big Sister's RoomI often say that as long as I keep a steady flow of little girl clients, I will be 100% fine being a boy mama for life. I was a Phi Mu in college, so I feel very well versed in many shades of pink:) Did you know that Shelby in Steel Magnolias was also a Phi Mu? Thus the love for<i> blush and bashful</i>. There is a scene before she leaves for her honeymoon where she looks at her composite. We had a slumber party in college where we froze the scene multiple times for verification. Miss Katherine is only three years old, but she is already pretty firm in her love of <i>pink and pink</i>. (photos by Michael J. Lee)<br />

Psych, I don't have a house and I took Latin in high school. BUT, I've been day dreaming a bit. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My dreams look like the above. Especially that guy on the bottom right. Would that not be the most awesome design studio? It's just perfect. They are all pretty perfect. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've actually been doing more than dreaming. Our sweet friend, <a href="http://www.wilsongrouprealestate.com/view_agent.asp?AGENTID=833">Leigh Ann Emerson</a> has been running all over town looking at things we find on the internet for us. Can you imagine what a terrible client I would be? She once sent me PDF plans for a house that we came really close to making an offer on. This lunatic had them in CAD with full phased renovations drawn out within 24 hours, all the while sending Leigh Ann emails like "what do you think about this kitchen layout"..."no this one"..."THIS is the one". Leigh Ann also went to design school with me. She's a saint, we're so lucky to have her.</div>

I was saving this until I was on a plane to Nashville (because good contractors are hard to find) but these guys are hands down the best in Boston <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/DM-Painting-Carpentry-9786098673/316858198334406">DM Painting and Carpentry</a>. The way it all came about was kind of interesting (to me, anyway). <a href="http://www.everythingleb.com/">Linds</a> and I were at a cocktail party last fall in Newport and met Gail Ravgiala with <a href="http://services.bostonglobe.com/consumer/dne/default.aspx">Design New England</a>. Gail is one of those people who really talks to you when she talks to you, like not looking over your should to see what other important people are there. I always appreciate that at big, mingly-type events. During this conversation I went off on some monologue about how sometimes our profession feels kind of shallow. Which was one of those moments, after it came out of my mouth, I was internally like "seriously, Stephanie, wrong crowd". But Gail then suggested I look in to the <a href="http://roomtodreamfoundation.org/">Room to Dream Foundation</a>, an organization that designs rooms for children suffering with various types of illness. That very next day my friend and very talented designer <a href="http://www.rachelreider.com/">Rachel Reider</a> posted photos on instagram of a room she was installing that weekend for the organization. I commented that I really wanted to get involved, she passed my name along to the founder, Stefan and a couple of months later I met Gavin. You can read more about Gavin's project specifics <a href="http://roomtodreamfoundation.org/portfolio/gavins-project/">HERE</a>.<br />

</div>
For the past three years I have wanted to document our little city garden and garden neighbors in Fenway, but most days hauling my tools and babies down there seemed like enough work in itself. A couple of weeks ago Remi grabbed his scooter, rendering me one less child to push, so I grabbed my camera.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is my favorite garden. This guy started gardening here 20 years ago, I believe, and now he does it professionally. People are always staring into his garden like a bunch of creeps. <i>Uh em</i>. </div>

This guy has dozens of pots in his garden, I love it. Collections always add charm don't they? It reminds me of the backyard in the tv show Parenthood, which is exactly what we want our one day backyard to look like.</div>

There is also a community plot that is handicap accessible. Ours plot is right across the path and it's a really neat thing to see this space get used. Pushing a stroller through the city gives you a little insight on accessibility or lack thereof. When I have to do things like ask a stranger to help me carry my double stroller down a flight of stairs because the T elevator is out of order, it really frustrates me for people that that are not just inconvenienced, but stranded. If you live in Boston and notice something like this, the city has a twitter handle under <a href="https://twitter.com/NotifyBoston">@notifyboston</a>. It's a productive way to complain! I use it often and they are fairly responsive. </div>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DzmeH4iYSeo/U862A0oiKWI/AAAAAAAAJko/X8tqeHjas4o/s1600/community+gardening.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DzmeH4iYSeo/U862A0oiKWI/AAAAAAAAJko/X8tqeHjas4o/s1600/community+gardening.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A couple of years ago a huge tree fell down along the main path, right into our plot. The lady that had our plot was older and did not want to garden in the full sun. So she moved plots and we became city gardeners. Sometimes Berkeley students play music on the stump, which is always cool. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CftWgNWPmNY/U862Q8wJEHI/AAAAAAAAJlo/Fu0zBFsbdUc/s1600/the+pru.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CftWgNWPmNY/U862Q8wJEHI/AAAAAAAAJlo/Fu0zBFsbdUc/s1600/the+pru.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here is our space. I am doing good on everything this year, EXCEPT grass. I let my oldest garden helper assist me with the weed and feed dispenser. He went a little heavy in some areas (i.e. full handfuls on the ground) so the grass burned and the weeds blossomed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uydKqtAhTck/U862I-JW1wI/AAAAAAAAJlI/i2yh1WCSYs8/s1600/our+garden+entry.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uydKqtAhTck/U862I-JW1wI/AAAAAAAAJlI/i2yh1WCSYs8/s1600/our+garden+entry.jpg" height="418" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this guy lives here along with 4,000 of his relatives. He's no <a href="http://blog.urbangrace.com/2013/hows-baby/">Smokey from Florida</a>. All of the gardners are terrorized by these little bunnies who eat everything, including a little boxwood I planted next to the playhouse last year. I only had enough energy to fortress my vegetable box while other gardeners have protected their entire plot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7XQaqrG7H_0/U862QC0odoI/AAAAAAAAJlg/75zgnA006iM/s1600/terrorits+bunny.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7XQaqrG7H_0/U862QC0odoI/AAAAAAAAJlg/75zgnA006iM/s1600/terrorits+bunny.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We come here mostly to play and escape the concrete. It's no show garden. My neighbor told me those vine-ish weeds are called Cape Cod Ivy and I love Cape Cod, so I decided to quit pulling them:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f1yZSn9d4Zc/U863Il9wcnI/AAAAAAAAJmQ/wsEPlc-v1_w/s1600/playhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f1yZSn9d4Zc/U863Il9wcnI/AAAAAAAAJmQ/wsEPlc-v1_w/s1600/playhouse.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The boys get dirty like little boys should.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5TR-AABJfP4/U862Uwiwn2I/AAAAAAAAJl4/O2qeDR4TFqU/s1600/truck.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5TR-AABJfP4/U862Uwiwn2I/AAAAAAAAJl4/O2qeDR4TFqU/s1600/truck.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I am constantly reminded that I need to stick to hearty plants.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rd1EtAoh3jM/U862G0oYB2I/AAAAAAAAJlA/84DscnIyiEY/s1600/gardening+with+boys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rd1EtAoh3jM/U862G0oYB2I/AAAAAAAAJlA/84DscnIyiEY/s1600/gardening+with+boys.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Only three blocks away from our building, it's such a nice escape. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Want to hear something hilarious...that new building on the right? A Target in the base! <i>A TARGET!!?</i> I am moving in less than two months and they are hanging drywall in a TARGET across the street from where I live. Oh, the irony.</div>

And thanks to his crazy good camera skills, we made the cover! Lynn, one of my favorite clients <i>ever</i>, worked in the magazine industry prior to motherhood so she had a good idea how things were going to work. And then my sweet, sweet friend <a href="http://www.everythingleb.com/">Lindsay</a> helped with styling, schlepping, and all the other glorious stuff no one reading those glossy pages ever sees. It was hands down the most fun shoot I've been a part of. The cherry on top was total cooperation by the star of the show, Miss Anna. Here are some pics that were included in the article and some that were did not. You can read the article, written by my talented friend <a href="http://stylecarrot.com/">Marni Katz</a>, <a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/magazine/2014/05/31/vertical-living-south-end/kn7zlvGhk9TYT1u10p4j5H/story.html">here</a>.<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5ouXdyvXRic/U6hXi_3thvI/AAAAAAAAJhg/ijbsAQepNi8/s1600/boston+to+nashville.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5ouXdyvXRic/U6hXi_3thvI/AAAAAAAAJhg/ijbsAQepNi8/s1600/boston+to+nashville.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In mid September my crew, along with my <a href="http://sabbeinteriordesign.com/">little business</a> <span style="font-size: x-small;">(new website!)</span>, will be relocating to Nashville!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
More ramblings on how excited/sad, relieved/nervous, and mostly thankful we are to follow. I will be feverishly wrapping up projects and orchestrating photoshoots for the remainder of the summer. I'm sure to be back in Boston for ongoing work for a while, but if you are in the Nashville area and looking for a designer, I hope to be taking on new work towards the end of October!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Did you think I was going to say I was pregnant again?!?<br />
This is probably better news seeing as we already have one baby in our closet:)</div>

Remember <a href="http://sabbespot.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-house-where-time-stood-still.html">this</a> house? It looks like this now. White really does fix everything. Shiplap going up in the kitchen this week. This one's going to be a beaut.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bryan Sabbe took his first selfie...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
..with instructions to show Remi (who says he wants to work in the hos-i-pital). But Remi, internet...same thing, right? I keep telling the kid that my job is way more fun than the hos-i-pital.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I recently obtained some free flowers for a photoshoot. Living on the edge. I would like to shoot all projects during Dogwood season. But eventually I would end up in jail.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IGzU3B2nc9c/U4dqe0iR1YI/AAAAAAAAJcQ/oCD6L7mmuvk/s1600/flower+stealing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IGzU3B2nc9c/U4dqe0iR1YI/AAAAAAAAJcQ/oCD6L7mmuvk/s1600/flower+stealing.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If my 2D floor plans are not cutting it for you, you can plan out your furniture with newspaper like this client did. She cracks me up, so precise. It was like <a href="https://www.flatstanley.com/">Flat Stanley</a>, but flat living room. Who would like flat living room mailed to their house!? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-odhiegELjUA/U4dqtxxi61I/AAAAAAAAJcY/UUASdeO4tcU/s1600/ellen+furniture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-odhiegELjUA/U4dqtxxi61I/AAAAAAAAJcY/UUASdeO4tcU/s1600/ellen+furniture.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then she let me go all crazy on this wall, sans newspaper plans.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Living on the edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sxikcvNBJ0Q/U4drQ4VXmrI/AAAAAAAAJcg/xTJaqikfNCM/s1600/ellen+collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sxikcvNBJ0Q/U4drQ4VXmrI/AAAAAAAAJcg/xTJaqikfNCM/s1600/ellen+collage.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I painted a pair of these spindle beds I found on CL last week. Not the easiest thing to paint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then I moved on to this monster this week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eDckd7RxgN0/U4dr7GUEKmI/AAAAAAAAJcw/qsIcCRQ2Prw/s1600/queen+bed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eDckd7RxgN0/U4dr7GUEKmI/AAAAAAAAJcw/qsIcCRQ2Prw/s1600/queen+bed.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Priming inside of a 5x8 storage unit. Really glamorous stuff going on over here. RIP, brain cells.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All three beds are for a really special project I am working on for a local non-profit. Will share more soon!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Move over Super White, I have a new love, Wicked White. <i>So</i> New England. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Using this in a really fun South End project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vdo-liEFHIc/U4dsQRtb-zI/AAAAAAAAJc4/SNLQExdcvBg/s1600/wicked+white.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vdo-liEFHIc/U4dsQRtb-zI/AAAAAAAAJc4/SNLQExdcvBg/s1600/wicked+white.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Remi took a stab as my intern. His presentation skills were pretty lacking and he required way too many snacks. Nepotism is always a little tricky. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2V2ZqXNgzW8/U4dslwlwK6I/AAAAAAAAJdA/c68hAoj4bUc/s1600/remi+designer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2V2ZqXNgzW8/U4dslwlwK6I/AAAAAAAAJdA/c68hAoj4bUc/s1600/remi+designer.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I found Katherine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XjS8V6qKakA/U4dsx0ZbNTI/AAAAAAAAJdI/fzgAF87R_54/s1600/katherine+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XjS8V6qKakA/U4dsx0ZbNTI/AAAAAAAAJdI/fzgAF87R_54/s1600/katherine+1.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Total diva, cannot really read her writing...but she pretty much nails it in the fashion department.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And she's obviously been reading design mags. Fancy heels seem to be in every stylist's prop bag these days.</div>

After five years of visiting, I just noticed my friend Natalie's back stairs are the most awesome shade of green.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found three stools in my building's dumpster, so naturally they are now in my storage unit. I have no idea what I will do with them. I already have our old stools in storage to make room for the kids play table. Old habits die hard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W3F52Hc1YQQ/U4dus_NdnzI/AAAAAAAAJd4/O2KzQjqIQ3c/s1600/stools.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W3F52Hc1YQQ/U4dus_NdnzI/AAAAAAAAJd4/O2KzQjqIQ3c/s1600/stools.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And we're still in construction on this little bathroom in Cambridge. <a href="http://instagram.com/p/jMcCs1ryDU/">Here</a> was the before. I love how you can see the ceiling fixture in the mirror. Such a nice <strike>surprise</strike> thoroughly planned and executed design feature.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rTx0znhNFZ0/U4dvCPIfmaI/AAAAAAAAJeA/KMB3MTTuWVU/s1600/Xiang+bathroom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rTx0znhNFZ0/U4dvCPIfmaI/AAAAAAAAJeA/KMB3MTTuWVU/s1600/Xiang+bathroom.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Among other things, we are still waiting on doors for that laundry closet. But we added a laundry closet in a previously non-laundry apartment! That's big time city stuff right there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Speaking of befores. I recently showed my tile guy <a href="http://sabbespot.blogspot.com/2014/05/loft-bathroom-renovation-before-and.html">this post </a>to show him how we used his product. He said, "that's cool how you just put the 12x12 right on the wall with no top cap" which of course was the before. <i>Come on, Victor.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And that is what I have spared y'all from oversharing on Instagram!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Speak of Instagram. Can I just ask, what is going on when a 72 year old lady has less wrinkles than me?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm all about filtering, but I think we all need to take a cue from <a href="http://instagram.com/mfamb">Jenny</a> and practice keeping it real.</div>

Hands down, my favorite IG account.</div>

If we are Facebook friends, you probably saw this last week. But I wanted to share some photos from a project I finished earlier this year. New England Home ran a little story about it on their blog, which you can read <a href="http://nehomemag.com/blog/stylish-bathroom-renovation-budget">HERE</a> (thanks again, Paula!) This is one of my favorite projects to date for one reason, my client let me design. Like, <i>really</i> design. Sometimes clients with good intentions hire me but they never really give me the reigns. Grace let me drive the whole buggy from start to finish and <i>it. was. fun. </i></div>

My favorite part was the linen closets we carved out. You can see the ends of the doors in the image above. We put outlets on the inside for her electric toothbrush and hair dryer. Small is not bad when you know how to make it work for you. And we made it <i>werk!</i></div>
