Warm Modernism

>> Thursday, January 14, 2010

Thomas O'Brien is known for creating "warm modernist" spaces. This is his home in New York, it was published in Interior Design Magazine in 2003, which means it was probably designed between 2001 and 2002. I think it's a good example that modern/mid century design can be just as timeless as traditional interiors.

The way people stage a room is always interesting to me. I'm not so sure about the unmade bed look. I think it may be trying too hard to make it look "warm". By the way, do you read Dwell? Dwell! Quit putting people in every room scene. One or two is plenty. We want to see the design of the space, not a man in his robe eating a bowl of cereal. If you've seen this month's issue, you'll know what I'm talking about. Otherwise, I love you Dwell.

i love it. and the bed should definitely be made up for the photo/staging. although having it undone made me want to curl up and take a nap. haha. :)

Wood and glass = a PERFECT combo! Love! (I'm loving that fireplace too...and the glass "wood bucket")!

I'll have to go check out Dwell to see what you are talking about now :)

I really, really love it. The black window frame and bannister detailing are so striking against the timber. I so want that red rug!

I can't get Dwell anymore as the shop has stopped getting copies. I might have to start a subscription as I'm really missing it! hehe I know what you mean though, photographers love action shots these days hehe!

My mom and I were just talking about how much we love Thomas O'Brien...his blue-and-white dishware at Target is great too, and obviously not too $$$

...oh and I TOTALLY agree about Dwell!

I'm with you on Dwell! Love the magazine, but they often have people covering up things that I'm trying to see. Annoying!
