Book Giveaway!

>> Saturday, January 31, 2009

I am very excited about this giveaway. It's only the second one I've ever done and this time I really like the prize. Funny things happen when you write things on the internet. Some of you know of my surprise pillow story. Well last week someone from Turner Publishing contacted me trying to get the word out about this wonderful book, History Photos of Memphis. She told me they would send me a complimentary copy if I wrote a post about it. Crazy right?! A gift for writing a post...who would have thought.

The funny thing is I already own the book! It's sitting right on my coffee table. My friend Kim was actually looking through it when visiting a couple nights ago, commenting on how cool it was. Someone gave it to us as a wedding gift and it truly was one of the most thoughtful, unique gifts we received. So I told the lady from Turner I thought it would be much more fun, seeing as I already had the book, if they would host a giveaway on my blog.

I do have an ulterior motive. I'm thinking most of the people who read my blog are in the Memphis area. If you stop by this blog in the next 2 weeks I think it would be really neat to leave a comment about your favorite thing about Memphis or the best kept secret in my flowers in the post below. If you don't live in Memphis that's ok too, maybe you've visited or would like to visit. Tell us what you love about it....Elvis? BBQ? All encouragement welcome. Our little city gets a bad wrap, but there are tons of great things about it. Let's use this post to give Memphis a little pep rally. I will take all the comments and put them in the random number generator and there we will have our book winner. If you're shy about the commenting thing feel free to email me. You can leave an anonymous comment as well, but make sure to check back and see if your comments was selected. I'll then compile all your comments and write a post about all of the wonderful things to do, find, and see in Memphis. And we and anyone else who reads this blog will be like WOW what a cool city! And we'll be like yeah...we know.

I'll start... My favorite thing to do in Memphis is the South Main Trolley Tour, the last Friday of every month. So fun! And it's even better if we eat at the Arcade first.

Get those cool insider tips to me! Deadline is February the 14th! Valentines Day!

Are we limited to one entry?

Lili February 1, 2009 at 12:54 PM

We both love looking at old homes so, our fav thing has been spending a day touring the woodruff Fontaine House in Victoria Village and having lunch at the Hunt Phelan Home. It was like steping back in time. What a neat time it would have been to live in Memphis.

Oooh!! Oooh!! Pick me!! There are sooo many gems in Memphis ... I think Central High School is beautiful. LOVE the sprinkler park near Cooper-Young. Madison still thinks the giant flower 'M' on E. Parkway at Madison Ave. is for her. Jerry's sno cones ... YUM-O!! The springtime bloom is spectacular. Painted brick houses. Pottery Barn Outlet & the Scholastic Book Warehouse Sale ;-)

Memphis does get a bad rap, but there is so much there that it doesn't get credit for. As far as beauty I don't think you can beat Central Gardens.

As far as my favorite memories from being there, one is definitely going to Huey's on Poplar on Sunday nights, ordering the West Coast Burger, and listening to the Memphis Soul Revue play some tunes.

There is also going to see the Redbirds on warm summer nights and then going to Rendevous. Just typing this is making me so nostaglic.

PS- Monday I did a post on Max Wenger who I saw on your blog, thought you might enjoy it!

I live in the opposite of Memphis... Phoenix, AZ. But I was so excited to see this giveaway. For my family, Memphis has always seemed like such a romantic place. My great grandfather owned a pharmacy and soda shoppe on Beale Street in the forties and fifties and my grandparents often attended dances on the roof of the Peabody Hotel when they were dating. I would love to be able to give this book to my mom so she could show the pictures to my son and tell us stories of her childhood in Memphis. Thanks for this wonderful giveaway!

The Peabody Hotel. It is where Ricky proposed to me (even before we lived in Memphis). And who wouldn't think those ducks are cute! I can't wait to take Caden to watch the Duck march.

My favorite place in memphis is the Cheesecake Bakery. Not sure this is a "secret" persay but whenever I mention it, people seem to have never heard of it. I also love hoping on the trolley and spending a Saturday afternoon downtown enjoying a redbirds baseball game and some good ol' BBQ nachos!

Joy February 8, 2009 at 1:52 PM

I've never been to Memphis but it sounds so romantic rich with tons of history.

Oh what fun. I grew up in Memphis. We moved when I was a junior in high school (Germantown). Oh how I miss Memphis. My favorite things were the Peabody ducks and going to the zoo when we had company. Oh and one of my very favorites was going to see the singing Christmas tree at Bellvue (sp?) Baptist Church at Christmas time.

Mason's Mommy, Lawyer's Wife February 10, 2009 at 7:08 PM

My husband and I lived in Memphis for six years. We loved it. I love to go back every chance I get. We loved Huey's, Central Gardens, Midtown, Christmas in Shelby Farms, and just driving down Walnut Grove and across Shelby Farms with the windows down!

I'd love to win this! I love so many things about Memphis...just in our own neighborhood we've got a cool sprinkler park, Otherlands, and tons of cool restaurants. And the zoo is awesome and just a few minutes away too...great giveaway! (and I'm super proud to have been mentioned in one of my favorite blogs, by the way!)

Robyn February 13, 2009 at 9:17 PM

I love our neighborhood..and the Italian restaurant we can walk to...Dino's. Chicken parm and homemade ravioli...YUM! My favorite BBQ is Central, and the Cheececake shop in South main is FANTASTIC! Other than food, anything at the Orpheum is fun. The river park is our favorite place to bring visitors..esp during the heat of summer when children run around in the stream and you watch boats go by.

Marie February 14, 2009 at 6:38 PM

We visit Memphis regularly as we have relatives there and our favorite things to do there is BBQ (of course) and the Pink House (Musuem?) -- I can't remember the exact name but it's big, it's pink and it has wonderfully neat stuff to see in it!
